Living with a story is about getting out and exploring new things. That doesn’t always mean that you are jet-setting to new continents. Sometimes, it is exploring and appreciating what is in your own backyard and everyday I am thankful for living in the beautiful Colorado.
My friends and I all somehow managed to land a Saturday off (unheard of when you work in retail) and there was no way we were about to waste a day off together as our summer is coming to a close. What better way to appreciate the good weather then with a day hike in the mountains. Our initial plan was to explore Hanging Lake (which is absolutely stunning but just shy of a four-hour drive) but I, being the driver, wanted to keep things closer to home.
After a little bit of research, I stumbled upon Staunton State Park. It is the newest state park in Colorado, just opening May 2013. Our end goal: Elk Creek Falls. I am always in search of waterfalls and thought that this would be a nice place to check out. The trail to the falls was under construction at the time but we did traverse the mountain-side to the overlook. This was the final 250 foot climb to the waterfall.
To say it is not what I expected is an understatement. I read that it was a truly impressive waterfall… not so much. But, I am still so happy that I had the opportunity to hang out with some of my favorite guys and enjoy nature. Colorado is such a gorgeous and scenic place to live and is worth any hike you can squeeze in a day.
Staunton State Park is a great place for families and is a pet friendly park. We did about thirteen miles round-trip but it was a fairly easy hike compared to others I have done in the past.
It doesn’t matter what you do, just go out and do something. Don’t simply exist, start living. And while you’re at it, live with a story to tell.
